Vote on climate bill is blocked in Senate
By H. JOSEF HEBERT – 1 hour ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republicans on Friday blocked a global warming bill that would have required major reductions in greenhouse gases, pushing debate over the world's biggest environmental concern to next year for a new Congress and president...

"It's just the beginning for us," proclaimed Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., a chief sponsor of the bill, noting that 54 senators had expressed support of the legislation, although that's still short of what would be needed to overcome concerted GOP opposition.

The Sierra Club chimes in...

"Based on their ongoing campaign of misinformation and outright lies, it is no surprise that Senators beholden to Big Oil, Big Coal, and other polluters did everything in their power to stop meaningful action on global warming.  It is disappointing enough that these Senators refuse to support the kind of smart energy solutions that will put America back to work and offer real relief to consumers reeling from rising energy prices, but it is truly shameful that they refused to even allow a free and fair debate on some of the most pressing issues of our time."

The environmental community was mixed in their support for this bill (it was far from perfect) but it was viewed as a vehicle to at least begin addressing climate change.

The environmental vote was YEA (60 needed)
Statements issued by non voters were all in support
Yet that was still only 54 in support of cloture.

The good news is that the last big vote on a global warming bill only garnered 38 votes in the Senate, so this is "progress." Hope the planet is patient with us.
